A key custom of this day is the baking and consumption of saffron buns, known as lussekatter or lussebullar in Swedish, which are rich, yeast-leavened buns flavored with saffron and decorated with raisins. The practice of baking sweet buns during the holiday season is believed to have originated in northern Germany and the Netherlands around the 17th century before spreading to Sweden. Saffron buns are often shaped in an S-form with spirals at each end, and they are enjoyed throughout the Christmas season.
