December 13: Sailor’s Day (Brazil)

Sailor's Day, or Dia do Marinheiro, is observed in Brazil every December 13 to honor Joaquim Marques Lisboa, the first Brazilian native Admiral in the Brazilian Navy. Born on December 13, 1807, in Rio Grande, Lisboa began his military career at the age of 15 and served in several conflicts, including the War of Independence of Brazil and the Paraguayan War. He passed away on March 20, 1897, and was later proclaimed the patron of the Brazilian Navy, with his birth anniversary celebrated as Sailor's Day. The holiday features official ceremonies, military displays, and various events to commemorate the contributions of sailors. Additionally, the Brazilian Navy also observes Brazilian Navy Commemoration Day on June 11, which celebrates the victory in the Battle of the Riachuelo in 1865.
