December 14: Bashkir Language Day (Russia)

Every December 14, the Republic of Bashkortostan in the Russian Federation celebrates Bashkir Language Day. Created by the World Kurultay of the Bashkirs in 2015, this day honors the Bashkir language and culture, marking the birthday of the famous Bashkir poet Miftahetdin Akmulla. The Bashkir language belongs to the Turkic language family and is spoken natively by around 1.4 million people, though it is considered vulnerable. Festivities include gatherings with writers, poets, and linguists, along with film screenings, theater performances, competitions, and workshops hosted by schools and cultural organizations. The celebration aims to encourage interest in Bashkir literature and enhance language education, emphasizing its importance within Bashkortostan’s rich ethnic diversity.
