Every December 14, Bangladesh observes Martyred Intellectuals Day to honor the Bengali intellectuals who were killed by the Pakistani Army during the Liberation War. As defeat became inevitable for the Pakistani forces, they carried out a brutal plan to eliminate numerous Bengali intellectuals—teachers, doctors, engineers, academics, and journalists among them. The victims’ bodies were discarded in killing fields around Dhaka. On this day, the President, Prime Minister, military leaders, and thousands of citizens gather at the Martyred Intellectuals Monument in Mirpur to lay wreaths in tribute. The observance stands as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made and the profound impact on the nation’s history.
