Bhutan National Day is celebrated on December 17 each year, commemorating the coronation of the first king of Bhutan, Ugyen Wangchuck, as the first Druk Gyalpo. The celebration takes place prominently at the Changlimithang Stadium, where preparations are made in advance. This national holiday, which dates back to 1907, is significant as it marks the establishment of the Wangchuck dynasty, still ruling today. During the celebrations, a statue of Ugyen Wangchuck is carried in processions. Unlike local Tshechu holidays, Bhutan National Day is observed nationwide, resulting in the shutdown of all government activities, making it the most important holiday in Bhutan. The title "Druk Gyalpo" translates to "Dragon King," reflecting Bhutan's identity as "The Land of the Thunder Dragon."
