National Day in Qatar, also known as Founder's Day, is observed every December 18. This public holiday commemorates the day Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani took power as emir of the Qatari Peninsula in 1878, marking the inception of the modern State of Qatar. Originally celebrated on September 3, the date was changed in 2007 to honor the country's unification and Sheikh Jassim's role as the founder of modern Qatar. Festivities include a National Day parade, heritage-themed cultural events at Katara Cultural Village, an antique car show, and firework displays. On this day, government offices, educational institutions, and most businesses are closed, allowing citizens to participate in the various celebrations across the country.
