December 18: López Jaena Day (Philippines)

López Jaena Day is observed in the city and province of Iloilo, Philippines, every December 18 to commemorate the birthday of Graciano López Jaena, a prominent Filipino journalist, orator, and social reformer born in Jaro, Iloilo in 1856. The holiday was established in 1970 and includes a commemorative ceremony at the Graciano López Jaena Shrine in Jaro Plaza, featuring flag raising, wreath laying, speeches, and a gun salute to honor his legacy. López Jaena was a co-founder of La Solaridad, a newspaper that highlighted social, economic, and cultural issues in the Philippines during Spanish colonial rule. He is recognized as one of the leading figures of the Philippine Propaganda Movement, alongside José Rizal and Marcelo H. del Pilar. Despite dying in poverty in 1896 and being buried in a mass grave in Barcelona, his contributions to social reform and journalism continue to be celebrated, with streets and squares named in his honor.
