Republic Day is observed in Niger every December 18, commemorating the founding of the republic and the establishment of the presidency in 1958. This national holiday marks Niger's transition to a semi-autonomous republic within the French Community, following the constitutional changes in France. Hamani Diori became the president of the provisional government on this date. The day is widely celebrated with public speeches, official ceremonies, and cultural events, and it has been a recognized holiday since 2005. On Republic Day, government offices and many businesses close, and one of the regional capitals is chosen each year as the main center for the celebrations.
