December 2: Armed Forces Day (Cuba)

Armed Forces Day is observed in Cuba every December 2, commemorating the landing of the yacht Granma in 1956, a significant event in the Cuban Revolution. The yacht was purchased by Fidel Castro in Mexico and carried 82 members of his 26th of July Movement, including the Castro brothers and Che Guevara, to Cuba. Upon reaching the Cuban shore at Playa Las Coloradas, they emulated the arrival of national hero José Martí in 1895. Following the overthrow of Fulgencio Batista, this date was designated as Armed Forces Day to honor the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces, which were officially established in 1960 and include the Revolutionary Army, Air and Defense Force, Navy, and paramilitary units. Although it is not a public holiday, the day is marked with various celebratory events and activities.
