Assam Day, also known as Sukaphaa Day, is observed in the Indian state of Assam every December 2. This official holiday honors Sukaphaa, a Dai prince who founded the Ahom kingdom in the 13th century. According to tradition, Sukaphaa left his homeland in Mong Mao after realizing he would not inherit the throne, eventually arriving in Assam in December 1228. The day is marked by various ceremonies, cultural festivals, and festive events throughout the state, celebrating the rich history and legacy of the Ahom kingdom, which managed to remain independent for nearly six centuries. Assam Day was officially established in 1996 to commemorate Sukaphaa's arrival and is a source of pride for the people of Assam, reflecting their historical resilience and cultural heritage.
