December 22: Diplomatic Service Day (Ukraine)

Diplomatic Service Day is observed in Ukraine on December 22 every year. Established in 2005 by President Viktor Yushchenko, this holiday celebrates the contributions of Ukrainian diplomats and employees of the country’s diplomatic missions, embassies, and consulates. The date commemorates the founding of the General Secretariat of International Affairs in 1917, which is considered the precursor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, formed in 1990. The day acknowledges the role of diplomatic employees in fostering peaceful cooperation between Ukraine and the international community, safeguarding national interests, and protecting the rights of Ukrainian citizens abroad. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, which currently employs over two thousand people, plays a central role in the observance of this day.
