Mother's Day in Indonesia is observed every December 22, commemorating the anniversary of the 1928 Indonesian Women Congress held in Yogyakarta, which focused on improving women's rights in marriage and education. Established by President Sukarno in 1953, this holiday originally celebrated the spirit of Indonesian women. However, during the New Order regime under President Suharto, it was used for government propaganda encouraging women to remain at home. Today, the day emphasizes expressing love and gratitude to mothers, with traditional customs including presenting gifts to mothers. Additionally, April 21 is celebrated as Kartini Day in honor of Raden Ajeng Kartini, an early Indonesian feminist and women's rights activist.
