People's Army Day, also known as National Defense Day, is observed in Vietnam every December 22. This holiday commemorates the foundation anniversary of the Vietnam People's Army (VPA), which was established in 1944 during the struggle against French colonial authorities and Japanese occupiers. The decision to form the army was made at the 1st Revolutionary Party Military Conference in September 1944, leading to the creation of Armed Propaganda Brigades, with the first brigade established on December 22. The VPA is now the armed forces of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, comprising several branches, including Ground Forces, Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard, and Border Defense Force, and its slogan is “Determined to win.” The day is celebrated nationwide with public speeches, solemn ceremonies, military parades, concerts, and various events, although it is not a public holiday but rather an observance.
