Tom Bawcock’s Eve is observed in the small Cornish village of Mousehole every December 23. This annual festival celebrates the legendary figure Tom Bawcock, who is said to have saved the villagers from starvation by bravely fishing during a storm. The event has roots that may trace back to pagan traditions, with the first recorded description appearing in 1927 by local archaeologist Robert Morton Nance. During the festival, residents bake and enjoy stargazy pie, a traditional Cornish dish made with potatoes, eggs, and sardines, with the fish heads protruding from the crust. The pie symbolizes the original catch of seven types of fish that Tom Bawcock brought back to the village. A lantern procession featuring a song about Tom Bawcock is also a key part of the celebrations, highlighting the community's heritage and the significance of the event.
