Takanakuy is an annual festival celebrated on December 25 in Chumbivilcas Province, located in the Cusco region of Peru. This vibrant event features traditional music, dancing, and public fist fights, allowing community members to settle grievances and release pent-up aggression from the past year. The festival, whose name translates from Quechua as "to fight" or "to collide," originated in the Santo Tomás District and has spread to other areas, including Lima. Participants dress in colorful costumes inspired by traditional attire, and the festivities begin with community gatherings and a parade. The fights occur in improvised arenas, where opponents engage in punching and kicking, while adhering to rules that prohibit biting and hair pulling. After the fights, participants are expected to reconcile and celebrate together, reinforcing community bonds. Despite attempts by the government to suppress the festival, Takanakuy continues to thrive across both rural and urban settings.
