The Feast of Saint Gabriel, known as Kulubi Gabriel, is observed in Kulubi, Ethiopia, every December 28. This celebration honors the archangel Gabriel, a revered figure in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, and attracts thousands of pilgrims to the town, where they participate in a festive procession culminating at St. Gabriel’s Church. The church was originally built by Ras Makonnen to commemorate the Battle of Adwa and was later rebuilt by Emperor Haile Selassie in 1962. During the feast, pilgrims engage in various customs, including praying to Saint Gabriel, performing vows, and bringing offerings such as candles and colorful umbrellas, which are later sold to support the poor. Additionally, about a thousand babies, often named after the archangel, are baptized during this time, especially those born after their parents prayed to him. The event highlights the deep religious significance and communal spirit surrounding the veneration of Saint Gabriel in Ethiopia.
