Holy Innocents Day, also known as the Feast of the Holy Innocents or Childermas, is commemorated on December 28 each year by the Catholic Church. This day honors the first martyrs, the children of Israel killed by King Herod in his attempt to find baby Jesus. According to the Gospel of Matthew, Herod ordered the murder of all baby boys under the age of two in Bethlehem, hoping to eliminate the prophesied King of the Jews. Traditionally, this day was marked by fasting and mourning in Ancient Rome, but over time, it evolved into a celebration where children are encouraged to play and have fun. In some regions, such as parts of Spain, South America, and the Philippines, children are known to play tricks and pranks. Additionally, in Trinidad and Tobago, children have their toys blessed during Mass on this feast day.
