December 6: Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women (Canada)

The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women is observed in Canada every December 6. This day commemorates the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre, where 14 women were murdered by Marc Lépine, who claimed to be "fighting feminism." Established in 1991 through a private member's bill by Dawn Black, the day has garnered all-party support and has become known as White Ribbon Day. The white ribbon symbolizes the fight against violence towards women and is recognized in 57 countries, where men and boys actively participate in efforts to combat this issue. On this day, Canadian flags on federal buildings are flown at half-mast, and citizens are encouraged to wear a white ribbon and observe a minute of silence in remembrance of the victims.
