Little Candles Day (DÃa de las velitas) is a traditional holiday celebrated throughout Colombia every December 7, marking the eve of the Immaculate Conception. This festive occasion began in response to Pope Pius IX's proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in 1854, leading Catholics to light candles and lanterns as a demonstration of faith. On this day, people place candles and lanterns on windowsills, balconies, and porches, illuminating sidewalks, streets, and public spaces. Notably, the municipality of Quimbaya hosts the annual Candles and Lanterns Festival, showcasing spectacular lighting displays. In Bogotá, the celebration kicks off the Christmas season, with families enjoying the city's decorations and various outdoor events. In the Caribbean region, it is customary to light candles before sunrise on December 8, often leading to all-night celebrations. Additionally, some regions mark the day by making the first buñuelos of the Christmas season, a popular donut-type fritter.
