December 7: Spitak Earthquake Remembrance Day (Armenia)

Spitak Earthquake Remembrance Day is observed in Armenia every December 7. This day commemorates the victims of the devastating 1988 Armenian earthquake, which measured 6.8 on the surface wave magnitude scale and primarily affected the cities of Spitak, Gyumri, and Vanadzor. The earthquake resulted in significant destruction, with many buildings collapsing, including hospitals, which led to the loss of about 75% of medical personnel. On this day, Armenian citizens participate in wreath-laying ceremonies and special church services to honor those who perished, with a notable memorial located in the central square of Gyumri, inaugurated on the 20th anniversary of the disaster. The earthquake caused an estimated 25,000 to 50,000 fatalities and injured between 31,000 and 130,000 individuals.
