December 7: Student Day

Student Day is observed in Iran every December 7, commemorating the student protests that occurred on December 7, 1953. This holiday was established after the Islamic Revolution of 1979 to honor the students of the University of Tehran who protested against Richard Nixon's visit to Iran and the resumption of diplomatic relations with the United Kingdom. The protests turned violent when police opened fire on demonstrators, resulting in the deaths of three students affiliated with opposition movements. Celebrations typically include local demonstrations organized by both secular and religious student groups at various universities. The Iranian government also organizes a national demonstration, which can sometimes clash with student-led protests, as seen during the protests following the 2009 presidential election.
