August 14: Energy Industry Employee’s Day (Poland)

Energy Industry Employee’s Day, or Dzień Energetyka, is observed in Poland on August 14 each year to honor the contributions of individuals working in the country’s energy sector. The day has its origins in 1956 and was initially celebrated on September 1 before being moved to the first Sunday of September in 1973. In 1991, the date was shifted to coincide with the feast day of Saint Maximilian Maria Kolbe, the patron saint of power engineers, who was executed in Auschwitz in 1941. This observance highlights the importance of energy industry employees in Poland, which has the fourth largest energy sector in Europe, primarily reliant on coal. While Poland is working towards increasing its renewable energy sources, the celebration underscores the dedication of those in the industry who are implementing necessary changes.
