August 14: Falklands Day

Falklands Day is observed in the Falkland Islands on August 14, commemorating the first sighting of the archipelago by English explorer John Davis in 1592. Although it was once celebrated as the national day of the Falkland Islands, it has since been replaced by Liberation Day, which marks the end of the Falklands War between the United Kingdom and Argentina. The name “Falklands” was adopted much later, with Captain John Strong naming the strait between the main islands in 1690. While Falklands Day is no longer an official public holiday, many islanders continue to celebrate it unofficially. The observance reflects the historical significance of the islands, which are a United Kingdom overseas territory, despite Argentina’s ongoing sovereignty claim.
