The Fast of Gedalia, also known as Tzom Gedalya, is a Jewish fast day observed worldwide on 3 Tishrei, which falls on September 25 in 2025. This fast commemorates the assassination of Gedalia, the governor of the Babylonian province of Judah, who was appointed by King Nebuchadnezzar after the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. His murder, instigated by Baalis, king of Ammon, is believed to have marked the end of Judah's autonomy, leading many Jews to flee to Egypt. The fast is observed from dawn until dusk, concluding when stars appear, and includes special prayers (tefillot) and blessings (brachot). The observance was instituted by Jewish sages, and when the fast coincides with Shabbat, it is postponed to Sunday to adhere to the prohibition against fasting on that day, except for Yom Kippur.
