February 10: Day of the Arabian Leopard

The International Day of the Arabian Leopard, also known as Arabian Leopard Day, is observed worldwide every February 10. This day was initiated by the Saudi Council of Ministers in February 2022 to highlight the critically endangered status of the Arabian leopard (Panthera pardus nimr), which is native to the Arabian Peninsula. The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution in June 2023 to officially designate this date, with the inaugural observance taking place in 2024. Events organized on this day include public awareness campaigns, conservation seminars, community events, and social media advocacy, all aimed at promoting the protection of the Arabian leopard and its habitat. The species faces significant threats such as habitat loss, retaliatory killings, prey depletion, and illegal wildlife trade, with fewer than 200 individuals estimated to remain in the wild today.
