Volunteer Defense’s Day, observed in Thailand every February 10, commemorates the foundation of the Volunteer Defense Corps (VDC), a volunteer paramilitary force established in 1954. The VDC was created in response to concerns about banditry and harassment from insurgent organizations near the Thai border, with the aim of protecting civilians and supporting the Royal Thai Armed Forces. Initially focused on border security, the VDC's role expanded in the 1970s to include urban areas in the fight against communist insurgents. At its peak in 1980, the Corps had approximately 52,000 volunteers, although numbers declined over the years due to the formation of the Thahan Phran, another paramilitary force. Today, the VDC plays a crucial role in maintaining internal security and combating the South Thailand insurgency. On Volunteer Defense’s Day, volunteers are recognized for their contributions to national security.
