February 14: Lui Ngai Ni Festival (India)

The Lui Ngai Ni Festival is celebrated by the Naga people in the Indian state of Manipur every February 14 and 15. This annual spring festival, which was declared a public holiday in Manipur in 1988, marks the beginning of the agricultural season with a symbolic sowing of the first seeds, accompanied by prayers for good crops and prosperity. It brings together over twenty Naga tribes residing in Manipur, as well as Naga groups from neighboring states like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Nagaland, who are invited as special guests. The festival features traditional music, folk dances, and costumes that reflect the rich cultural heritage of the Naga people. The name "Lui Ngai Ni" derives from words in three Naga languages, meaning "seed sowing festival." The main events are hosted alternately by four district headquarters: Chandel, Senapati, Tamenglong, and Ukhrul. Despite the majority of Naga tribes being Christian, they continue to celebrate their traditional festivals, showcasing their unique customs and cuisine.
