February 14: Parents’ Worship Day (India)

Parents’ Worship Day, also known as Matru Pitru Poojan Divas, is observed in some Indian states every February 14. This holiday was initiated by Asharam Bapu, an Indian spiritual leader, as an alternative to Valentine’s Day, which he viewed as a Western cultural invasion. The first celebration took place in 2011 at Asharam’s Yoga Vedanta Seva Samiti in Rourkela, Odisha, with over 700 participants. The holiday emphasizes the love between children and parents rather than romantic love. In 2012, Asharam encouraged all Indians to celebrate this day, gaining support from notable politicians and celebrities. By 2015, Chhattisgarh became the first state to officially recognize Parents’ Worship Day as a school holiday, followed by Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Jharkhand. The event has also seen media campaigns, with hashtags like #ParentsWorshipDayOn14Feb trending on Twitter.
