Archbishop Janani Luwum Memorial Day, also known as Luwum Day, is observed in Uganda every February 16. This public holiday was officially established by President Yoweri Museveni in 2015 to honor Janani Luwum, who was born in 1922 and became the Archbishop of the Metropolitan Province of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Boga-Zaire. Luwum was a prominent critic of the repressive regime of Idi Amin, and he was arrested on February 16, 1977, accused of treason. The following day, it was reported that he died in a car crash while being transported for interrogation, but evidence suggested he may have been murdered. In Uganda, the day is marked by a wreath-laying ceremony at Luwum's grave, commemorating his legacy as a martyr recognized by the Church of England and the Anglican Communion.
