Mizoram, originally inhabited by the Mizo people, faced significant challenges, including a famine in 1959, which led to political activism and ultimately the demand for statehood. The Mizo National Front played a crucial role in this movement, culminating in the signing of the Mizoram Peace Accord in 1986.
