February 21: Tourist Guide Day

International Tourist Guide Day is observed worldwide every February 21. Established by the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations (WFTGA), this professional holiday has been celebrated since 1990, following its proposal by WFTGA's then president, Titina Loizides. The WFTGA, founded in February 1985, represents over 2,000 individual tourist guides from more than 70 countries, serving as a global forum for tourist guides, associations, educational institutions, and tourism partners. The day aims to highlight the role of tourist guides as cultural ambassadors of the regions they represent. Initially, fifteen countries participated in the first observance, and the number of participants has been steadily increasing. Members of the WFTGA are encouraged to organize events that draw attention to the significance of tourist guides and the tourism industry.
