Mashramani, also known as Republic Day, is celebrated in Guyana every February 23. This festival marks the day when Guyana officially became a republic in 1970, following its independence from the United Kingdom in 1966. The celebration originated in Linden, organized by the United States Junior Chamber (Jaycees), who later formed the Jaycees Republic Celebrations Committee to promote the event. The name "Mashramani" comes from the Arawak word for Mashirimehi, reflecting the festival's roots in Amerindian traditions of celebrating special events. The first Mashramani celebration was so successful that it was expanded to the national capital, Georgetown, where it became a national holiday approved by President Forbes Burnham. The festival features a grand costume parade in Georgetown and attracts participants from various regions, including Linden and Berbice, starting before dawn and peaking a few hours after sunrise. Mashramani is recognized as the largest event in Guyana, showcasing the country's vibrant culture and heritage.
