Cebu City Charter Day, observed exclusively in Cebu City, Philippines, is celebrated every February 24 to commemorate the city's official grant of cityhood in 1937. This special non-working holiday was established in 1992 by President Corazon Aquino and first celebrated in 1993. The day includes various events such as a mass, wreath-laying ceremony, awards ceremonies, contests, concerts, and official dinners. Cebu City, known as the Queen City of the South, has a rich history, having been a major trade center and the site of significant events, including the arrival of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. The city was granted its initial city status in 1594 but lost it after the Treaty of Paris in 1898. Cebu City played a crucial role during the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos and has since undergone rapid economic development, particularly during the "Ceboom" period in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
