February 24: Tortilla Chips Day (United States)

National Tortilla Chips Day is observed on February 24 every year in the United States. This day celebrates tortilla chips, a popular snack food and appetizer commonly found in Tex-Mex and Mexican restaurants. Tortilla chips are distinct from corn chips, as they are made from nixtamalized corn, resulting in a milder flavor and aroma. The popularization of tortilla chips is credited to Rebecca Webb Carranza, who, in the 1940s, began selling fried, misshapen tortillas cut into triangles at her family’s El Zarape Tortilla Factory in Los Angeles. Although they gained popularity in California, it wasn’t until the 1970s that tortilla chips became widely recognized across the country. To celebrate, people often enjoy tortilla chips with dips such as guacamole, salsa, or chile con queso, or use them to make nachos.
