Every February 5, Finland observes the birthday of Johan Ludvig Runeberg, the nation's national poet, who was born in 1804. Although it is not an official flag day, the state flag is traditionally flown on this occasion. Runeberg wrote in Swedish, as the Finnish language was primarily used in religious contexts during his time, and his most significant work, "The Tales of Ensign Stål," is an epic poem about the Finnish War. The prologue of this poem, "Our Land," serves as Finland's national anthem, with music composed by Fredrik Pacius. On Runeberg's birthday, it is customary for people to enjoy Runeberg torte, a pastry believed to have been created by his wife, Fredrika, which is flavored with almonds and liquor and topped with raspberry jam. The torte typically appears in stores in early January and is available until the celebration of his birthday.
