February 8: Prison Service Day (Poland)

Prison Service Day (Święto Służby Więziennej) is observed in Poland every February 8. This official professional holiday was established in accordance with the Prison Service Act of April 9, 2010, to commemorate the anniversary of a decree signed by Józef Piłsudski in February 1919, which marked the establishment of the modern Polish Prison Service. The day recognizes the role of the prison service, a state executive agency responsible for managing prisons and executing criminal penalties, including imprisonment and detention. The Polish Prison Service operates under the Ministry of Justice and has its own organizational structure, with 85 prisons across the country and an official capacity of nearly 80,000 inmates. Notably, Wronky Prison is the largest facility, accommodating over 1,400 inmates. Prior to 2010, the holiday was celebrated unofficially on April 26.
