Umuganura, or Harvest Thanksgiving, is observed in Rwanda every first Friday of August. This public holiday celebrates the country's cultural heritage and achievements across various sectors, particularly agriculture, which engages 90% of the population. The festival's roots date back to pre-colonial times, where it was customary for families to dedicate the first fruits of the harvest to their ancestors before consuming them. Umuganura was reintroduced as a national event in 2011 by the Institute of National Museums of Rwanda, with support from the Ministry of Sports and Culture. The festival aims to honor Rwanda's rich cultural heritage, foster connections between generations, and celebrate accomplishments in agriculture, health, education, culture, sport, industry, and tourism. Key crops in Rwanda include tea, coffee, beans, bananas, potatoes, and sorghum, with tea and coffee being significant cash crops for export.
