This dish, consisting of fried fish in batter and thick-cut chips, has its origins in the frying traditions brought to Britain by Jewish immigrants from the Netherlands. The first fish and chip shops emerged in the 1860s, and by 1910, there were over 25,000 such establishments across the country. The holiday was established in 2015 by the National Edible Oil Distributors’ Association (NEODA) to honor the British fish and chip industry. Typical customs include enjoying fish and chips from local shops, often accompanied by salt, vinegar, mushy peas, or pickles. The dish remains popular not only in the UK but also in countries like Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.
