Heroes' Day is observed in Zambia every first Monday of July as a public holiday dedicated to honoring the sacrifices made by individuals in the struggle for independence from British rule. This day commemorates both the heroes and heroines of Zambia, recognizing those who gave their lives for the nation's future well-being. A notable proposal in 2004 suggested including members of the Zambian football team who perished in a plane crash in 1993 among these heroes. The central observance takes place at a statue in Lusaka, the capital, which was erected during the presidency of Kenneth Kaunda. This bronze statue depicts a man with no shirt and shoes, raising a chained hand in the air, serving as a significant symbol during the celebrations.
