Wildfire Community Preparedness Day is observed in the United States and Canada every first Saturday of May. This annual campaign aims to encourage individuals and organizations to take action to reduce the risk of wildfires, which can lead to human fatalities, property destruction, and health issues from smoke. The initiative originated from a survey of middle school students in Texas and Colorado who wanted to learn about wildfire safety; it was first piloted in Colorado in 2013. The day is administered by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in the U.S. and FireSmart in Canada. Participants are encouraged to prepare their homes by clearing combustible materials, maintaining vegetation, and educating their communities about wildfire safety. The focus is on protecting homes within the Home Ignition Zone, which extends from the house out to about 100-200 feet, divided into three subzones.
