Recurrence pattern: Every year on the first Saturday of December.
Chester Greenwood Day, also known as Earmuff Day, is celebrated on the first Saturday of December in Farmington, Maine, to honor its famous resident, Chester Greenwood. Greenwood invented earmuffs at the age of 15 to protect his ears from frostbite while ice skating, as he was allergic to the wool caps commonly used at the time. With the help of his grandmother, he created the first earmuffs by sewing flannel pads onto a wire ring. This simple yet effective design quickly gained popularity among his friends and the local community. Over time, Greenwood improved the design by using bands instead of wire and introducing velvet pads, eventually establishing a factory in Maine that produced earmuffs for over 60 years, including supplying troops during World War I. The day celebrates his innovative spirit and the legacy of a practical winter accessory.
