International Cherry Pit Spitting Day is observed worldwide every first Saturday of July to celebrate the unique sport of cherry pit spitting. This unusual activity, which involves spitting a cherry pit as far as possible, was popularized by Herb Teichman, who initiated the International Pit-Spitting Competition in the early 1970s at Tree-Mendus Fruit Farm in Eau Claire, Michigan. Although the original competition has since been discontinued, the day continues to honor Teichman's legacy. Various competitions have emerged globally, including the Canadian National Pit Spit Championship in Blenheim, Ontario, and events in Germany and Australia. Participants typically receive a cherry to ensure fair competition, as fresh pits are easier to spit. The Guinness world record for cherry pit spitting distance is held by Brian “Young Gun” Krause, who spat a pit 28.51 meters. Celebrations can include organizing friendly competitions or visiting local fruit farms.
