International Vulture Awareness Day, also known as International Turkey Vulture Day in the Americas, is observed worldwide on the first Saturday in September. Initiated by the Hawk Conservancy Trust in England and the Birds of Prey Programme of the Endangered Wildlife Trust in South Africa, the day aims to educate the public about the ecological role of vultures and their conservation status. Vultures, which are obligate scavengers, play a critical role in ecosystems by consuming decaying organisms and preventing the spread of infectious diseases. Unfortunately, their populations have dramatically declined due to factors like poisoning from veterinary drugs such as diclofenac. The inaugural event took place on September 5, 2009, and people celebrate by learning about vultures, visiting local zoos, donating to conservation organizations, and sharing information on social media using specific hashtags.
