First Sunday in June: Textile Industry Workers’ Day (Turkmenistan)

Textile Industry Workers' Day is observed in Turkmenistan every first Sunday of June, celebrating the contributions of workers in the textile sector. Established by President Saparmurat Niyazov during the opening of the Ministry of Textile Industry's new building, the holiday was first celebrated in 2006. The textile industry is crucial to Turkmenistan's economy, with half of the country's irrigated land dedicated to cotton cultivation. Turkmenistan exports both raw cotton and textiles to various countries, including Russia, Ukraine, China, and the United States. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the industry experienced rapid growth, leading to the establishment of fourteen cotton-processing plants between 1991 and 2004. As of 2013, the textile sector comprises 74 enterprises producing a range of products, including yarn, fabrics, and garments.
