First Tuesday of August: Night Out

National Night Out is observed in the USA every first Tuesday in August, aimed at promoting safer communities. Established in 1984 by the National Association of Town Watch, the event began with 2.5 million participants from 400 communities across 23 states. Today, it includes participation from all states, although Florida and Texas can move the event to the first Tuesday in October to avoid hot weather. Activities range from simple backyard gatherings to large festivals, such as those in Columbus, Ohio, which feature live music, food, and entertainment. The event encourages community cooperation and is organized by block watchers, non-profit organizations, companies, and police departments.
