Seamen’s Day, also known as Fishermen’s Day, is observed in Iceland every year on the first Sunday in June. The holiday was established in 1937 and first celebrated on June 6, 1938, to honor fishermen and others whose professions are connected to the sea, reflecting the significant contribution of fishing to Iceland's economy. Although the economy has diversified, fishing still accounts for 40% of export earnings and employs 7% of the workforce. Celebrations typically include a flag-raising ceremony, first held in 1987, and a sea festival featuring entertainment for all ages. Originally marked by church services attended by fishermen before heading out to sea, the holiday has evolved into a broader celebration of maritime culture. If Seamen’s Day coincides with the Christian holiday of Pentecost, it is moved to the following Sunday.
