Heroes’ Day is observed in Zimbabwe every second Monday of August, commemorating the sons and daughters who died protecting their country during the liberation war against British rule. The main event takes place in Harare, where ceremonies are held at the graves of fallen heroes, and the President of Zimbabwe participates in wreath-laying activities while engaging with the families of the deceased. In addition to the official ceremonies, young people organize traditional marches from the city center to the cemetery, singing revolutionary songs along the way. Various bands, children’s choirs, and veteran choirs perform free concerts on the streets, and dance groups showcase traditional dances such as injukwa and itshomani. While the observance has become more official and restrained over time, it remains a significant public holiday in Zimbabwe.
