Third Saturday in August: Homeless Animals Day

International Homeless Animals Day is observed worldwide on the third Saturday in August each year. Established by the International Society for Animal Rights (ISAR) in 1992, the day aims to address the issue of pet overpopulation, which leads to millions of unwanted animals being euthanized annually. Events and activities organized by animal welfare organizations and humane societies include adopt-a-thons, microchip clinics, spay/neuter clinics, rallies, candlelight vigils, and dog walks. This day serves as a reminder for individuals to consider adopting pets from shelters and to spay or neuter their animals to prevent unwanted breeding. The observance has grown in popularity, with activities taking place in over fifty countries across all six populated continents.
