National Police Day, also known as Chinese People’s Police Day, is observed in China every January 10. Established in 2020 by the Ministry of Public Security with the endorsement of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party and the State Council, this day honors the People’s Police, which is the national civilian police force of China. The date was chosen as a reference to the police hotline number 110, first introduced in Guangzhou in 1986. The People’s Police, formed in October 1949, is responsible for various tasks including safeguarding state security, maintaining public order, and preventing crimes. It consists of four main branches: Public Security Police, State Security Police, Prison Police, and Judicial Police, each reporting to different state agencies. On this day, activities may include ceremonies and events recognizing the contributions of police officers to public safety and security.
