James Bedford Day is observed worldwide every January 12 to commemorate the anniversary of the death of James Hiram Bedford, the first person to undergo cryonic suspension after legal death. Bedford, a psychology professor diagnosed with metastatic kidney cancer, arranged for his body to be cryogenically preserved in hopes of future revival. Following his death in 1967, his body was preserved using a process that involved cooling to prevent decomposition and replacing blood with cryoprotectant solutions. His remains have been stored in various cryonics facilities, currently held by the Alcor Life Extension Foundation. Although the likelihood of his revival is considered extremely low due to the primitive preservation techniques used, the day serves to promote cryopreservation research and awareness.
